Monthly Programming

MDTU hosts a wide variety of public events, including presentations and workshops by leading fly fishing pros and conservation experts, research updates from fisheries scientists & managers, seasonal outings to "match the hatch" on local streams, social gatherings, and more. Due to the pandemic current programming has migrated online, via the Zoom platform. Events are free and open to all, no membership required to participate. 

MAY ONLINE CHAPTER EVENT: THURSDAY 5/19 at 7:30pm
Our May 19 chapter event (on Zoom) event features a presentation by guest speaker Jim Morris about the Eccleston Mitigation Site, a large-scale stream and wetland restoration project on the Upper Jones Falls in Baltimore County.

Our April chapter event (on Zoom) will include a presentation by author, fly-tier, and MDTU Board Member Dr. Stephen Wright, featuring fly tying demonstration and discussion. (More details coming soon.) 

MARCH ONLINE CHAPTER EVENT: THURSDAY 3/17 at 7:30PM
Our March 17th speaker (by Zoom) is Devin Olsen, medal winning member of Fly Fishing Team USA.  Devin will share the modern European Nymphing techniques he and Lance Egan learned and developed through competitive angling in Europe.  With Lance Egan, Devin is the author of a book on European Nymphing:  Tactical Fly Fishing.  He has also produced three highly regarded DVDs on nymphing:  Modern Nymphing, European Inspired Techniques; Modern Nymphing Elevated, and Adaptive Fly Fishing.  

Devin maintains a web site Tactical Fly Fisher that is full of information, including a blog and film, on fishing techniques and gear.

Our February chapter event (on Zoom) will feature Phil Gay, the owner of Trout and About. Phil lives right on the Gunpowder and has been fishing and guiding on the river for over 25 years! He will give a run down of the entire Gunpowder, section by section, discussing hatches, optimum flows and parking availability. Might even be a few fishing tips!

Join us online next Tuesday for our monthly chapter meeting, which will include the next presentation in a fall series of online events featuring MDTU's Upper Gunpowder Falls Watershed Brook Trout Conservation Partnership.  

Jamie Weaver, Watershed Forester, Maryland Forest Service, Department of Natural Resources, will lead a discussion and presentation of woodland management practices and technical services available to private landowners in Maryland, including planting programs available through entities which assist landowners in financing conservation measures.
 

SEPTEMBER 2021 ONLINE CHAPTER EVENT--OPEN FORUM & ANNUAL BUSINESS: THURSDAY 9/16 at 7:30PM

Following our typical summer break, on September 16th we'll kick off another enjoyable and educational season of MDTU events and programs. Thursday's meeting will begin with brief annual chapter business, including election of officers. Next, Tom Giannacccini will discuss MDTU's highly successful Trout in the Classroom project, and plans for the new school year.

The bulk of the meeting will be devoted to an open forum; we want to hear from MDTU members! Participants can introduce themselves, share fishing tips and stories, and even show pictures of trips and notable fish via screen sharing on Zoom. We also welcome suggestions for guides/outfitters, fisheries and conservation experts, and other relevant speakers or topics to feature in upcoming meetings. We hope to see you, and hear from you, on September 16th!

Join MDTU on Zoom this Thursday evening for a conversation with Adam Frederick and Glen Hedelson of Maryland Sea Grant. Learn about the Aquaculture in Action program, and other ways MD Sea Grant and Trout Unlimited are creating learning opportunities for youth, including innovative use of technology for water quality monitoring, and helping students raise multiple fish species for release such as trout, perch, striped bass, and shad.

Next Thursday's chapter event (on Zoom) will feature a presentation by 
Tom Pelton titled: Blue Collar Environmentalism and the Red/Blue Divide. Pelton, a national award-winning environmental journalist, has hosted "The Environment in Focus" public radio program (and now podcast) since 2007.  He is also author of the book, "The Chesapeake in Focus," published by Johns Hopkins University Press.  And he works as director of communications for the Environmental Integrity Project, a non-profit organization dedicated to holding polluters and governments accountable to protect public health.  From 1997 until 2008, Pelton was a journalist for The Baltimore Sun, where he was twice named one of the best environmental reporters in America by the Society of Environmental Journalists.

Kirk Deeter is the editor of TROUT magazine. He is also an editor-at-large for Field & Stream, and the editor-in-chief of Angling Trade. A lifelong angler, he has produced award-winning stories from the tip of Tierra del Fuego in Argentina, to north of the Arctic Circle in Russia. His work has appeared in WIRED, Garden & Gun, The New York Times, and elsewhere. He co-authored the best selling Little Red Book of Fly Fishing. He lives in Colorado with his wife of 25 years (Sarah), and son (Paul).

Theo Pike is a British author who has been involved in urban river restoration for nearly 20 years, starting on London’s River Wandle, and sparking enthusiasm for improving urban rivers across the rest of the country. He is now leading the Wild Trout Trust’s Trout in the Town program across the south of England. Theo will share a presentation titled: Trout in Dirty Places: People and partnerships restoring the UK's urban rivers

Urban rivers in the US and UK are coming alive again – often thanks to the efforts of local communities.Theo visited MDTU's October 2019 meeting to talk about his experiences, and this year he’ll be updating the story for us – with historical throwbacks, the UK’s first Trout in the Classroom project, case studies of urban river projects, and even more photos of big trout from the UK’s restored urban rivers. Theo's own websites can be found at theopike.com and urbantrout.net
